This last article reminds us that in 400 BCE, Hippocrates referred to the elder tree as his "medicine chest." Other noted classical healers, including Theophrastus, Dioscorides and Galen, regarded the elder as one of nature's greatest healing plants. This plant has been used for over 2,000 years! Mother Earth also known as Gaea (Gaia) makes so many of her own beautiful medications and only in recent times (within the last 100 years) have we stopped looking to her to help us recover.
PROPERTIES OF THE HERBS
Elderberry – Elderberries naturally contain A, B, and C and stimulate the immune system and it’s antiviral. They developed several formulas based on these complex sugars that have been clinically shown to help all kinds of cold/flu. Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu, of Hadassah-Hebrew University in Israel found that elderberry disarms the enzyme viruses use to penetrate healthy cells in the lining of the nose and throat for Avian flu – If you have chickens… feed ‘em elderberry!
It can be made as a tea for daily consumption or you can make an elderberry syrup to take every day. Elderberry boosts the natural immune system in your body. It’s not a cure-all as many people think. In order to reap the most benefit from this herb it is best if introduced into the immune system on a daily basis. During an actual illness, it’s best to increase consumption. Same way you normally take it, just change it to three times a day.
Oranges – This is a natural immune booster as well because oranges contain Vitamin C. After you eat the orange, consider drying out the peel and using it in conjunction with elderberry to make the tea or syrup.
Rosehips – Another wonderful addition for the Vitamin C team which will help your natural immune system to fight flu and cold season.
Cinnamon – Not only does it taste fabulous, but it has a practical side too! Cinnamon is filled with antioxidants which protect your body from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. It is also an anti-inflammatory and helps your body fight infections and repair tissue damage.
